Our approach, which is based on harnessing the agricultural potential of seaweed through science-led principles, will enable young people to pursue seaweed farming and processing apprenticeships to become skilled in and revive a practice that is both cultural and traditional to Ireland. It will also provide a means for a skilled workforce to return to rural locations which suffer from high levels of unemployment and emigration, as opportunities are created in further sectors. With this project, our mission is to build a modernised macroalgal biotechnology discipline in which we can develop products that will mitigate the impact agricultural processes have on climate change – we hope that in promoting a connection with the environment along with economic growth and development of rural areas, our approach can grow as a tool for social and environmental transformation in Ireland and globally.
